A touching tribute by Dr. Lederberg to the man who was to become his mentor while Lederberg was at Columbia University. Ryan, in the Department of Zoology, offered Lederberg a fellowship through the Jane Coffin Childs Fund, thereby giving him his first work in the laboratory and teaching him the discipline of laboratory research.
