1086 East 160 street, Cew YorkJ.Y., July 6,1Y42. Dr. Frank H. Stodola, Dept of Organic Chemistry, Cblumbia University, Dear Sir: Although I had piannea to work all summer, I find myself attracted tq tne possibilities of your Chem s42C oourse. I shoula not trouble to write you except that I anticipate some technical diffioultics in the manner of satis- faotion of prerequisites. Last January, with Prof. h'elson's permission, I was able to pass the final exam In Chem 41 as an achievment exam on the bask of personal self-instruotion for several years. I havechad no other ohem courses in Columbia College, but in high school b3arned the rudiments of qulitative analysis. Ky main interests are in physiological cln'emistry- for the last few months I had been working at Columbia on enzyme-inhibitor8 and 2Eeir efrect on mitosis in the onion root-tip- so tnat my laboratory experi- ence in Chem 41 material may not be quite up to par. I have prepared a few compounds,however- acetaldehyde, methyl orange, Dilagneson I (dinitrohenzene- azoresoroinol) and other simple preps. However,1 plan to spend Borne evenings this month brushing up on tnat technique at a very well-equ$pped home lab Of a friend. Under these oircumstanoes,do you anticipate any diffioulty in ao- cepting me into your course, Chem42C with credit for the Coliega? Prelimina ry remarks by my oollege adviser indicate no difi'iculty there. Sinoerely yours,
