UXIVEkSITH OF CALIFORSIh, RIVERSIDE cl-- 26 January 1985 DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY RIVERSIDE. CALIFORNIA 92521 To: Associates, Science hi? a w af Knowing From: John A. Moore W Denver;. Symposium. Even when we exclude the biased opinions of the members of the Education Committee, such a large number of individuals expressed approval of the Science a a m a---Human Ecology symposium that we can be certain it was a success. The only real problem was a false (fortunately) fire alarm that forced the evacuation of the auditorium during the morning session. The project is now accepted as an important and useful part of the ASZ Annual Meetings, having the warm support of the ASZ Officers and members. The Allen Press did its expected magic and the preprints of the essay arrived well ahead of time and were available for those attending the sessions. The Film program, in two parts, screened some excellent films but both the projectors and projectionists left something to be desired. Xhe Essav preprint A thousand copies of the essay, Science u a Hay ef Knoum--&mm pcology, were available and at the close of the meeting about 125 were left. A copy is-being sent to each of you who may not have been at the meeting, % Human Rcoloa~ Proceed- All of the speakers delivered their manuscripts by the 9 Janualy deadline and, after a very quick check, I sent them on to the Editorial Office of the American Zooloais~ They are scheduled to be printed in the May 1985 issue. Reprinis should be available by early summer and, as before, they will be sent to all individuals who request a copy. A very generous grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York makes this possible. Even though the reprint will be nearly 300 pages in length we hope to be able to keep the price for multiple copies, such as for classroom use, at $3.00 each. Evolutionary Biology Proceedings. Very large numbers of reprints of last year's symposium on Evolutionary Biology have been distributed but we still have a good supply remaining. Once again, the Carnegie Foundation grant allows us to continue to send copies to individuals and sell bulk quantities for $3.00 a copy. Should any of the cosponsoring societies wish to do SO, it would be appropriate for them to indicate to their membership that we still have copies of Evolutionary fliolocv and that Human Ecolouy should be available by July 1985. Requests should be sent to me. 1 1984 Meeting ti ti Education Committee. It was decided to continue the Science as g Wayaffiaa~u project along current lines. The topic for the 27-30 December 1985 meeting in Baltimore will be "Genetics" and the 27-30 December 1986 meeting in Nashville will be "Developmental Biology." Hart and Anderson will organize the Film Programs and Moore will arrange the symposia and write the essays. The Carnegie Corporation grant will support us for both years. As of October 1984, 14,262 copies of Science M h J$lay ef Knowing Fvolutionarv -- Rioloav have been distributed. About 2,300 remain. Ingrith Deyrup-Olsen will continue to be in charge of evaluation and, with William V. Mayer, of the laboratory exercise program. They are exploring ways of our cooperating with the Association for Laboratory Education in developing laboratory exercises appropriate for the 'science as a way of knowing' approach. Plans for repeating the symposia at the Annual Meetings of AAAS are in abeyance. It was suggested, however, that members of the Education Committee be encouraged to organize sessions at meetings of the cosponsoring societies on the 'science as a way of knowing' approach and otherwise stimulate a concern for science education at the college and university level. . UDdaUng &&J.&z& af Associ.am. Now that the Science Waefmuing project gives promise of continuing, an atte?pt will be made to involve the cosponsoring societies more intimately. It will be necessary to identify individuals who can serve as links between the cosponsoring societies and the Science ?a~ a m ef Know project. For some groups, such as NABT, AIBS, or BSCS, the executive officer would seem to be the appropriate individual. Both the presidents and secretaries might be the obvious individuals for the societies. My suggestions will be found in the attached list of Associates. If any cosponsoring group prefers a different arrangement, please let me know before 1 March. Should any individual scheduled to be replaced desire to continue to receive memos about SAAWOK and copies of reprints, let me know and you will be transferred to the category of concerned individuals. Similarily should any individual scheduled to remain on the list of Associates, wish to be deleted, please let me know. 2 ASSOCIATES OF THE SCIENCE Bs B WX!,X m RNOWING PROJECT (29 January 1985) Officers af m -erican Society ef zooloqistg Morse, M.
