WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE SAINT LOUIS DEPARTMENT OF MICROBlOL06Y CUCLID AVENUE AND KIN6SH16HWAY June 5, 1958. Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Medical Genetics Genetics Building University of Wisconsin School of Medicine Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear Joshua: I am very pleased that the space problem seems to have been resolved and I hope that all the remaining arrangements will be disposed of very soon. I can understand the importance from your side and if it would help to have me give Alway a nudge, let me know. As we discussed on the phone, the arrangements for the use of biochemistry facilities will have to be worked out as your needs and ability to cope with them become clear to you. My most intense wish is to escape as much administrative responsibility as possible. I have confidence that you will be symphathetic to this objective. Our present shop arrangements are just adequate for our needs, and if anything a little on the short side. Per- haps, with your additional requirements, a solution would be to provide an assistant for our shop man. Similar ConsiderationSmay apply to other general service areas. I have written Lyman Stowe%ur preferences for outfitting room j-231 as a student-fellow lab. Its location is relatively disadvantageous for a staff lab insofar as it is at some distance from cold and warm rooms and other general service areas; however, it will still be acceptable to us to have it outfitted as a staff lab like 3-551 and your suggestion for this switch with j-231 is a very reasonable one. With regard to the optimal time for teaching medical genetics , it may be difficult for us to decide at this distance; it would seem to me that there is some advantage in having it follow biochemistry in the, third quarter of the first year if this can be arranged. The syllabus you have outlined sounds awfully good, and you can enroll me as your first student. Sincerely, AK/McK Arthur Kornberg.
