Carrington, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, asked Apgar for a brief contribution to a symposium on human teratogenesis. In this reply, Apgar agreed to write the essay, but expressed her impatience with redundant medical articles.
