Each person infected with either syphilis or gonorrhea, is, at the be- ginning qf the disease, a menace to other persons. Some persons remain in an infectious condition all their lives Are Women and Children Safe in Your State? Eight States have undertaken vigorous campaigns against the venereal menace. Is your State one of the eight? Comparisons between the States chould not hc drawn, because, in the lack of exact figures, the estimates above are based on the assumption that the proportion of cases of syphilis to the adult popula- tion is the same in each state. The above figures are based an the estimate of population of the United States, Bulletin 133 of the Bureau of the Census, p. 15. The adult population is estimated to be 56% of the total. The estimate of the wevalence of smhilis is based on the conservative statement of Dr:W. A. Pusev. of the Surceon Gen- eral's Committee on Ven&eal Disease, tks- the effect that 35; is used here!. See "Syphi!is, a -Modern Problem," "more than 3% of the entire adult population a&z syphilitic'~~(exactly by William -4. Pusey, M.D., p. 106.
