Here the physiologist Jacques Loeb (1859-1924) congratulated Heidelberger in his and Avery's discovery that type-specific antigens of pneumococcus bacteria are polysaccharides. Loeb predicted that Avery's and Heidelberger's achievement "may turn immunology into a new and most fertile direction."
