THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY BALTIMORE, MARYLAND 2 12 18 DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY August 23, 1983 Dear I just received from Russ Doolittle of the University of California, San Diego a chain letter originated by Professor Ito in Japan. This letter is an attempt to mobilize world scientific opinion in favor of total nuclear disarmament. Professor Ito's idea is that if each scientist will send his or her own version of the letter you are now reading favoring universal nuclear disarmament to ten of his or her colleagues, asking them again to spread the chain, that an extraordinarily large number of signatures could be accumulated in favor of this vital move. Could you please send your letter to ten colleagues (no doubt there will be some overlap among lists) and a copy of your letter to Professor Y. Ito (Laboratory of Applied Entomology and Nematology, Nagoya University, Furo-cho, Chikusa-ku, Nagoya, Japan)? I enclose the list on which my name appeared as well as my list of ten. Sincerely, Dr. Christian B. Anfinsen CBA:djh Enclosure copy to: Prof. Y. It0 R. Doolittle's list G. M. Fuller C. B. Anfinsen M. G. Rossmann M. R. Bernfield A. Kropf J. M. Buchanan S. Magnusson J. J.
