April 2, 1962 Dr. 1. C. Briegar Institute de Conihca E~cola Suparior de Agricultura `Muir de Queirot** f irac icaba sao Paul0 Bruil Deer Dr. Brieger: I understand that Dr. Almiro Bluown6chein will be coming thir sus6ser to the Worth Carolina State College at Raleigh. Dr. Wellhauren ha6 asked Dr. William L. Brown and 166 to select 6opy ~~i6e material that we consider appro- priate for chromorom6 o xamiuation6 by Dr. Blwnschein and by others who will be at Worth Carolina. We would very much like to have included in this some of the races that you have described in your maise monograph. Dr. Brown has relected 6ome races that he consider6 would be appropriate for thir purpo6a, a list of which is enclosed on a eaparate oheet, It would be 1~0s t convenient for us if Dr. Blumenschein could briag the seed with him. For the purpose6 of determining the origin6 and migration6 of races from studias of their chroPso- some composition, it La quite necessary that ori+nal collections be used as bulked seed of a race would not 6erve the purpo6e. Aloo, it is most important to know the exact geographic location where the plants were grown from which seed was obtained. Otherwise, erroneous conclusion6 could be drawn from the chromsome studies. It 18 porrible that you mey not now have stock6 of 6eed of the desired raca6 that fulfill the rtated retluirmnt6. If, however, you do have them, we would appreciate having 100 kernels of each collection, par- ticularly of those that are starred la the lirt. Dr. Brown suggests that after the kernels have been dusted with DDT, the packet6 of kernels be placed ia one package. An import tw would need to accom- pany the package, I believe, also, that Dr. Brown would be able to obtain a pass for their entry into the United States. If 1 hear from you that some col- lection+ will be available to u6, I will contact Dr. Brown irrawdiately about the pars. It ie posrible that you may have heard that the Department of Genetics of the Carnegie Institution is being closed down. ft will cease to exist as a De- partment at the end of this coprLug June. I will stay here at Cold Spring Harbor for a while, at least, until we know whether or not the new Institute that we are trying to form will materialixe. If it does, it will incorporate into one Insti- tute with a cqletely new sponsorship all the former property of the Department of Genetic6 of Carnegie Insltitution and also all of that of the Long Ieland Biological A66ociation.
