CARNEGIE INSTITUTION OF WASHINGTON 1530 P STREET, NORTHWEST WASHINGTON. D. C. 20005 OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT May 19, 1967 Dear Barbara, It is a very particular pleasure to tell you that at our Annual Meeting our Trustees voted with the greatest enthusiasm to confirm an action which they had earlier recommended, in anticipation of your "retirement" from the Institution. The vote was that you be appointed a Distinguished Service Member of the Institution, the appointment to begin on July 1, 1967, and to continue for three years. This post of Distinguished Service Member of the Institu- tion is intended by the Trustees as the highest distinction that can be conferred on a retiring Staff Member. It has been pre- viously held by only two individuals in the Institution - Dr. Ira S. Bown of the Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories, and Dr. Merle A. Tuve of the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism. The purpose of it is to make possible a continuation of activity, in any area that you wish and at any place that you wish - includ- ing the continuation of your present (or any other) program at Cold Spring Harbor. It carries with it a stipend of $15,000 per annum. May I add my warmest congratulations to those of all the Trustees and staff members of the Institution - and congratula- tions to the Institution itself on its fortune in your continuing association? With every best wish, Dr. Barbara McClintock, The Genetics Research Unit, The Carnegie Institution of Washington, Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, New York 11724.
