Dear Dr. Coffman:

  Enclosed is the signed endorsement of conditions associated with
establishment of the Barbara McClintock Chair of Plant Genetics in the
Department of Plant Breeding and Biometry at Cornell University.   Not
only am I especially honored by the establishment of this Chair but also
warmed by this renewed association with the Department.  In my junior year
at Cornell I took the only undergraduate course in Genetics.  It was given
in the Department of Plant Breeding. It was fascinating. I must have shown
my enthusiasm because I was asked if I would like to take the graduate student
course.  This course was given in a very different style but it was just as
fascinating.  I knew then where I wanted to go.

  May I express to you and to the other members of the Plant Breeding Faculty
how very much I appreciate receiving this very special honor.
