Description:
Sawyer became director of the State Hygienic Laboratory in Berkeley in 1910. The laboratory was responsible for following up on reports of rabies, and, when possible, verifying rabies infection in animals by examining brain or spinal cord tissue with a microscope; some of the lab technicians were young women such as Miss Cunningham.
