The Wilbur A. Sawyer Papers
- Title:
- [Margaret Sawyer in an airplane, Brisbane, Australia]

High resolution version (4,322,348 Bytes)
- Description:
- In the summer of 1919, Sawyer and his family moved to Brisbane, Australia, to head the Rockefeller Foundation's new hookworm control campaign there. Though his duties required much travel, Sawyer cherished his time at home with his family. Here, Mrs. Sawyer takes her first ride in an airplane. The caption on the back of the photograph reads, "Margaret 'Up in the Air.' The middle figure is Margaret. The rear figure is another woman passenger. In front is Lt. Roberts. Rising from the flying field at Windsor Park, Brisbane." Airplanes were still a novelty in 1920, but by the 1930s, Sawyer would fly many hours during a visit to South America.
