In the summer of 1919, Sawyer and his family moved to Brisbane, Australia, to head the Rockefeller Foundation's new hookworm control campaign there. Though his duties required much travel, Sawyer cherished his time at home with his family. The caption on the back of the photograph reads, "Ready for the native parade. [From right:] Peggy with Motuan grass skirt and Motuan tom-tom (Papua), Ruth with fibre rami from Trobriands, and Motuan comb, Gertrude with model of native out-rigger dug-out canoe with crab claw sail. Ruth has banana-seed beads from Papua & armlet from German New Guinea"
