The Wilbur A. Sawyer Papers
- Title:
- [View of Corumba from above the Paraguay River]

High resolution version (1,898,069 Bytes)
- Description:
- In 1934, Dr. Sawyer made another trip to Brazil to inspect yellow fever control activities, including an investigation of a puzzling outbreak of the disease in a rural region near the Bolivian border. With Dr. Fred Soper, Sawyer traveled by car to Coronel Ponce, where the most recent yellow fever cases had occurred. Unlike more typical yellow fever outbreaks, these had occurred in rural rather than urban areas, and the victims had been infected by non-Aedes aegypti mosquitoes at some distance from their dwellings. On the way back Sawyer and Soper stopped again in Corumba, to get a plane to take them to Sao Paulo and on to Rio de Janeiro. The caption on the back of the photograph reads, "June 24, 1934. Corumba. View toward sunset across Paraguay River."
