Stanisr (Bacteriology) mivm$ity of California Berkeley, California DearFriends, As you probably know from previous notices, the enclosed Open Letter was published on August 2l as an ad in the New York Times. As you certlaldLy realize, the substance of this statament is a much more diffiault and controversial netter than, for example, a statemmt on Civil Ihfcnae o The zmqx?nae TV date, limited though it was because of tinting, has been generally favorable, but it indicates the need for a long educational effort to open up public debate on the basic iames of the arms race. One effective way is the continuing action of faculty &grxmpa. WC are very pleased with the zest with which our Boston group has gotten right back to work at this early date in the acade?mic year; thus@ of youwho are on the RostonAreaGroupmailing list will shortly receive the first mailing of the yaar. Meanwhile, is there a chance that a Rerkelay group, to@&?r with Davis and Stanford, may reprint the enclosed ad? Three considerations are of intireect: 1) The New York !l'imq~ will ham a West Coast edition starting October 1 (I think)* An ad published in the Times before November 10 (mm year fmrn our first open letter) would, If propm-ly handled, be allgible for a lC$ mPund, 2) In reprinting an ad, it nay be easier to get signatures because people do not have to sgree with all details of the statement, but only with the intent of segublishing as a public service. 3) In rsprlnting, there is no necessity to state that the f'ull cost fs paid by the signers. Hence, if som generous outsider wants to pay part of the cost, it can be accepted. We have aevmal thousand copies of the ad avetilable. It my help, in collecting signaturcer, to give each person a copy. We can ettsily send you loo0 or 2ooo copie?s, once we know that y-011 have a chance to reprint it. Bestwishee andregards, eel/na 53.
