After joining the faculty of MIT, Luria became increasingly involved in American politics. Much of his involvement consisted of writing letters to newspaper editors and contributing to "open letter" advertisements. In this draft of an open letter that appeared in the "New York Times" on 16 February 1965, Luria and hundreds of other scientists urged President Johnson to "take the initiative" in Vietnam to prevent an escalating war that had the potential to involve other countries, such as China. The letter appeared during a critical period of U.S. involvement in Vietnam, approximately six months after the passage of the "Gulf of Tonkin Resolution" that granted the president broader leeway in responding to military activities and threats by North Vietnam.
