In this paper, which was based on a tribute to biological chemist--and Nobel Prize winner--Carl Cori given at the 8 December 1976 meeting of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Luria discussed the relation between the scientific enterprise and modern democratic society and the roots of the strains and misunderstandings between the two.
