EVERETT KOOP: If you were to ask people who wear this uniform, they'd say my most important accomplishment was revitalizing the [U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned] Corps and protecting it from attacks by people who would rather see it elsewhere. If you ask the private sector, that are interested in voluntary organizations like the American Heart, American Lung, American Cancer...they'd say smoking. If you ask people who are worried about AIDS, they'd say, "he's the one that gave it to us straight." So...it depends who you ask, and I don't I'm think I'm really equipped to give you a good judgement on that.
