EMBASSY OF ISRAEL WASHINGTON, D.C. 10 October 1986 Dear Surgeon General, I was deeply touched by your letter and moved by the fact that inspite of your busy schedule and responsibilities you took the time to inquire about my health. I was lucky indeed to be a beneficiary of the outstanding skills of American physicians - who managed to perform my triple by-pass surgery, successfully enough to enable me to be out of the hospital after 6 days and back to work 21 days after surgery. I seize this opportunity to renew the expression of my sentiment of gratitude for the campaign against smoking initiated by you during your visit to Israel. As a direct result of your efforts and the publicity given to your statements - we see today an improvement in the situation in this respect in Israel: the number of people that smoke has diminished. Wishing you and your family good health and in the hope to have the privilege to see you soon again. Sincerely, &FRO5 Ambassador C. Everett Koop, MD Surgeon General and Director, Office of International Health Department of Health & Human Services Rockville, MD 20857
