- In May 1984, Koop launched a "Campaign for a Smoke-Free America in the Year 2000", an effort to integrate anti-smoking messages and events into the K-12 school curriculum. Koop hoped that if students received information on the health consequences of smoking in every grade, they would reject the use of tobacco and endorse further restrictions on smoking in public places.
