computerized searches for symptoms and diagnosis of medical conditions

What might be considered a precursor to artificial intelligence or an expert system was an early experiment by Dr. Donald Lindberg that simulated a physicians differential diagnostic logic. Initially the project was called CONSIDER. The appropriate name suggests that the physician should "consider" in his differential diagnosis the output of this computer program. The program provided an association between patient findings and diagnoses that the physician should consider. This project was further developed by other medical centers under the name RECONSIDER.
