In his letter Crick drew on his broad knowledge of X-ray crystallography in commenting on Klug's recent hypotheses regarding the three-dimensional configuration of atoms within nucleosomes, compounds of chromosomal DNA and histones (proteins that have a structural or scaffolding function) that appear like beads on a string under the electron microscope.
