The first viait to the prison ms mde on July 23rdt with Dr Beguet , who had previously carried out tests of different types of vaocine at the prison. All work and observations on louse powder herewith reported have been done by one or more of the group (Dr. ?&&ok, of the Pasteur Institute; Drs. Davis, Markharrr, Riehl and Soper, of the Rookefeller Foundation) assisted by inmates of the prison working under alose direct supervision. Propewdering louse infestation. Munination of the alothing of 158 prisoners to asoertain the percent- age of prisoners with lioe and to detexmine roughly the degree of infestation was made from July 28th to July 29th. 108 of the examinations made were in Hard I. where &use powders were to be tested and 58 were in '8ard Ii where no powder was to be ap- plied* These latter oases were expeoted to serve as controls against the possibility ,of a seasonal reduation of louse incidence being attributed to the use of the inseot- ioides. Ward 11 was chosen to test the eff'icienoy of insauticides on a community in v&&oh everyone in the community was treated and oontact with untreated persons was reduoed to a minimum. The group of 108 men whose clothes had been examined to establish the degree of ingestation were divided into three groups t Group 1. to be treated with Inseotioide G.and to be retreated whenwer post treatment examinations should indicate that it is neoessaryi Group 2. to be treated with Inseotioide M and to be retreated arter an interval of one week; Group 3. to be treated with Insecticide Ls end to be retreated when indioated by post treatment indication. All other persons sleeping in Ward 1. were placed in Group 4. to be treat- ed with Inssotiaide tl as often as naaessary to prevent this group beooming a source of reinfestation for the study Groups, 1,2 and 3- 2. Plans were mde to apply inseotioide SIta the garments of all new prisoners a.aing to Ward 1. and to those returning to the Ward after a stay hn the prison infirmmy. The first emunination of 50 prisoners in Jard 2 revealed 49 Infestations of which 39 had 10 or more lice oaoh; 13 days later oxeminstion of 4S of these revealed 48 inferstations of which 44 were of 10 or spore lice each,
