Dear Fred,

Believe it or not I've begun writing on that damned history again after two or three years in the doldrums. I have reached the brusque closing down of the IHD by CIB and the ice became so thin that I couldn't skate on some large areas at all. Now I need your help again on 2 points.

1. Some of DDT's insecticide properties were discovered by Geigy but when the US got hold of some, it was turned over for investigation to the Bureau of Plant Quarantine and Entomology at Orlando, Fla. Did Orlando concentrate on developing a louse killer, or did they work out its toxicity for all household insects? If so, it had been used experimentally to kill anophelines when the Army asked you to use DDT to control malaria around Rome in 1945. But was that work the first practical attempt to control malaria on a large scale with DDT?

2. Is vaccination by scarification with [ . . . ] used only for mass vaccination of primitive peoples, and if so, why?
