In this brief article, Szent-Gyorgyi announced that he and his research team at Szeged had discovered how muscles contract: two proteins, myosin and actin, form a protein complex, actomyosin, that will contract when combined with magnesium chloride and ATP. Several years later, the Szeged group would publish a collection of very detailed reports titled "Studies on Muscle."
