As many physicians began to question whether diuretics that were commonly administered to treat hypertension contributed to cardiac arrhythmia, Freis felt compelled to defend their use. In this article, he noted that in several recent studies, the Veterans Administration Cooperative Study failed to find any evidence of a relationship between thiazides and cardiac arrhythmias.
