The 1950s and 1960s witnessed the development of numerous successful antihypertensive agents. As these new drugs became available, it became apparent that these drugs seemed to significantly prolong the lives of patients with the most severe cases of hypertension. In this article, Freis reviewed data on patient mortality that was collected in several recent clinical trials.
