Annotation by Joshua Lederberg:
KW: phase variation, has since been found to be a strategem deployed
very widely in the microbial world - but, pace transposons and
 rag/immunobiology,, not seen
in multicellulars.  Perhaps not looked for hard enough.  Elucidation by
Iino, Simon and others of reversible DNA inversion led in turn to
site-specific recombinases, which are now an indispensable too for gene
knockouts and other manipulations in genetic engineering;
