Dear Josh:
Bernie has arranged for me to give a seminar on genetic recombination in bacteria in a few weeks.
Can you give me any references to papers by other experimenters who have obtained recombination? Also, what is the present status of the high frequency strain and of recombination in other species or strains? To the HFR strain K-12?
I'm going to spend just 3 more weeks looking for 2-stage drug resistance, and if I have nothing promising by that time I'll go back to Meningitis.
Yours,
Gordon

P.S. In your P.N.A.S. paper on aberrant heterozygotes, top of p181, you say prototrophs have segregated in the random process on complete medium. Can you reconcile this with the high stability of the diploid on minimal medium?
Have you ever pursued further your analysis of prototroph colonies for homogeneity with respect to markers? Negative results in larger numbers especially when if other selector mutations were tested similarly, should, I think, yield critical evidence on 2-vs 4-strained crossing-over, to the extent that either it must not occur, or else there is only one viable product of meiosis. This would narrow down the possibilities, at least.
