Dear Dr. Kaufmann:
Thank you for your invitation to participate in the conference on studies of the gene, May 30 - June 2, sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences.
I hope that it may be possible to augment your budget for travelling expenses, since the present allotment will mean a considerable out-of-pocket outlay on my part. However, I appreciate that other participants will share this difficulty, and will be happy to attend.
Since the N.A.S. is sponsoring the conference, may I assume that transportation tax exemption forms will be valid to avoid the 15% excise tax?
I suppose that it is much too late for any action now, but may I suggest that this meeting might be more conveniently timed a week or 10 days earlier? The scheduled time is very near final examinations. For my part, also, I will be in Cincinnati the week ending May 20 and could more conveniently go on to N.Y. from there. I am not proposing this change for my own convenience, but wonder whether it might not better suit other participants as well.
I would appreciate it if you could send me a list of the other participants, and full details on the timing of the meetings, to facilitate in arranging transportation.
Yours sincerely,
Joshua Lederberg
Ass't Professor of Genetics
