Dear Lederberg:
I'm very sorry to hear from you that you are campaigning against yourself for the GSH standing committee. I can only hope that my active campaign for you here has counteracted your activities.
Your "platform" was easily the best of those circulated. Mine, for example was scarcely meaningful to anybody who didn't attend the Columbus business meeting. And it seems to me that what is needed on the committee is people who can think straight and express themselves clearly. One has only to read the 9 circulated statements to see that by that criterion you are the strongest candidate.
I fail to see that gray hairs and a reputation good, bad, or indifferent--enter into the question. They do if the committee is to speak for itself; but not if, as I feel is proper, the only function is to report to the Society.
Incidentally, after reading the statements I feel encouraged to hope that we will actually get a harmless committee.
Sincerely yours,
A.H. Sturtevant
