Dear Dr. Garfield:
I have your letter inquiring concerning my attitude about more financial support for science. Obviously, the situation is too complex to deal with in a few words or with a single generalization. Indeed, I doubt that the 500 words allotted to an editorial would be sufficient. I feel that there are some areas which could effectively use considerably more funds. There are others, including high energy physics and space, which are more amply funded than their potential benefits warrant. On the other hand, bio-medical research, especially neurological phenomena, merits more support than it has been getting. I have also commented on the need for more funds for earth science and for chemistry.
Sincerely,
Philip H. Abelson
