Dear Josh:
Please excuse the scrawl -- I'm 3500 miles from my secretary. Your letter wandered around Boulder apparently for a week before it was delivered, and by that time you had already departed for Europe. However, I found that Arthur had your itinerary, and I hope this note gets to you, albeit somewhat belatedly.
I just can't tell you how overjoyed I am at your decision to come to Stanford. The evolution of a climate of scientific and intellectual ferment and stimulation at Stanford has been a sort of autocatalytic process to which your coming will contribute immeasurably. In addition, I have the feeling that we (you and Arthur and I and several others, including Bob Alway) will enjoy close personal friendships through the years, which should help to make the school an unusually pleasant place.
I would gladly invite you and Esther to stay with us in Sept., but all of your house-hunting, etc will be in Palo Alto, which seems like an inconvenient place for you. If you do want to stay with us, however, please consider this a most cordial and proper invitation: otherwise consider it an invitation to come for dinner and a quiet evening with Lee and me, so save us at least that much time. Let me know your schedule for the Palo Alto visit if you get time, but if you are pressed, I'll just wait for a phone call when you get there. My best regards to Esther -- have a fine trip.
Henry Kaplan

Annotation by Joshua Lederberg:
Node: Kaplan, Henry S. Chief of radiology, and renowned radiotherapist:
(he established definitive treatment for Hodgkins disaese). He played
central role in recruiting Kornberg and myself to the new Stanford
Medical School. In later years I tried to mediate his conflicts with
deans and others at Stanford, without much success. Tragically, he died later
of lung cancer, though he abhorred smoking.
