Dear Joshua:
Re: Lederberg, J., in Nature
Nothing delights me more than your name in Nature
See June 21 issue 181, p. 1706-1707 Genetic Aspect of Somatic Cell Variation collection of Oak Ridge April 2-5 -'58 conference by P.C. Koller.
Again under Bacterial Proto plasts 181, 1713-1715 by Brenner, Dark, Gerhardt . . . et al and Weibull Inato[?] that references 12 (b) and 25 are to Lederberg J. It would appear that you are a popular man -- I should say the campus belle.
Stanford is a satisfactory location. My last offer -- way back in {1931 1933 to join the Carnegie Institution Laboratory with H.A. Spoehr -- came from there. One
French, C. Stacey from Harvard took the job a few years later when H. A Spoehr vacated the directorship. At the time I also had the U of Minnesota under consideration- -with R.A. GORTNER. My wife made the decision NOT TO MOVE. I was made Brittingham Professor of Biochemistry- -the rest in our building were labelled [sic] Agricultural Chemists.
One should always listen to the intuition of ones mate -- or restated let the woman in your system have a big hand in all decisions.
See for instance Evangelium Matthai 27, verse 19 in which it is recorded that the wife of Pontius Pilate the Roman governor of Judea from A.D. 26 to A.D. 36 was advised by his wife not to sentence Jesus Christ. My bible reads:
So you know Pilates part in responsibility for the crucifixation [sic] of Jesus Christ and the legal aspects of the trial have been much debated. The record reveals that much pressure was brought to bear upon Pontius Pilate by the Jewish priests.
Had Pontius Pilate followed the intuition of his wife (allegedly based on a dream) things might have been quite different in this world.
So my advice is -- listen to Esther M. Lederberg -- to her dreams.
Cordially yours
P.S. I have already passed judgment on 2 (two) rabbits this A.M. I shot them with my 12-10. They are strung up on the clothes line to show our son Tom what the old man can do at 57 by getting up early.
