Dear Joshua: Bit by bit I am catching up on The Literature. Yesterday I ran across a picture of you in the Chicago Tribune of the A.C.S. under date 12-22 -- which I had not seen before. You look pleased and happy in that starched shirt and white tie. [Very becoming indeed]. Questions -- trivial to be sure -- but you should know. I do not recognize the Lady labelled [sic] MRS Tatum -- yet she is so labelled [sic] in

several pictures -- one displayed in Madison. Mrs Tatum appears as a deep, sultry brunnette [sic] with what we old horse-men call a Roman-Nose. Does the Nobel Committee supply a mistress -- along with the award? Would you -- or Esther kindly help poor Link out -- or is the modern hair-do [sic] system etc capable of completely transforming women these days.

good solid winter -- my kind!! And to think that K.P.L . has to be cooped up in such fine and stimulating weather. One of the best winters of my life was 1950-1951 when I worked out the bartering practices for [ . . .] parts which are non standard practice. I had a rat-rant[?] and according to my log book from November 12 1950 till March 18-1957 K.P.L. never missed a day of taking records in the field. One AM at 700 just south of

Black Earth -- it was -28 degrees at 700 AM -- and K.P.L. and his dog Alex were there.
What do you know about the Physics Dept at Stanford especially the theoretical physics. Our eldest son John who will graduate from Antioch College in June has Stanford on his list if hes [sic] successful on his fellowship applications -- (theoretical physics). I of course am not to determine his career -- but I hinted that

Physics U.S.A. 1959-2000 AD is free like a bird in a cage and that if he wished to retain his, moral and intellectual integrity a field not dominated or determined by the A.E.C. would offer a freer climate. In fact I agreed with Einstein's statement -- "that he would take up a trade like plumbing" "in preference to being one of Lewis Strauss's children". So long [ . . .] the most recent particle from the gene -- again and again -- finally you will end up with D(+) Glucose. Regards as usual etc
