At a recent meeting, Curt Stern brought up an old paper by Winkler (Planta, 1938, 27:680) on chimeras from tomato plus night
shade. Winkler claimed to have observed "Burdonen" which he interpreted as the result of synkaryosis between somatic
cells of each parent. I would be interested to have your views on the validity of this observation and to know whether there
is any more current work on it. I should think it would not be too difficult to set up contrived chimeras in which "somatozygote"
tissues would be readily detected by pigmentation.
