Dear Alex
on "Josh Lederberg's goals."
Some while ago you were probing me on this subject, in the most friendly and avuncular fashion. I would like to respond and prepare to follow up in heart-to-heart discourse.
To put first things first, my vision for R.U. has not altered from what I wrote in my first "annual report"; and I don't know how to improve on that articulation.
You had more than that in mind -- our conversation had started on the theme of extramural diversions; and I would be glad to go into that as well, though I don't have in writing so clear a statement of philosophy. (By far the most compelling and time-consuming of these is my work in Washington on national security problems, unhappily more and more on threats from biological warfare.)

Anyhow, I wanted to (re)open a discussion that would help us to get to know one another much better and more personally, as I would certainly like to do.
Given your busy schedule, I'd be glad to trek to your office for lunch or otherwise; or when you can take the time, to do likewise here.
Yours,
Joshua.
