"New Director for NIH"
Speaking for the interests of the health research community, I was so pleased to see your name under this headline. I know there is no small element of personal sacrifice in your shifting to such a role: but there is no one I would rather have seen do it.
Please let me know if there is any way I can help mitigate your own burdens in the splendid accomplishment of a crucially important task.
Yours sincerely,
Joshua Lederberg

Perspectives on the linkage of science and medicine.
P.S. A neater
print will follow; and I know this may be a tendentious time.
I do enclose some thoughts with which you may or may not agree; certainly I would be glad to discuss them with you.
Few people will understand better than yourself the revolutionary impact of diagnosis of densely spaced molecular polymorphism: to shift the base of genetic medicine ever more from the investigation of rare (revealing) syndromes, to the most pervasive aspects of public and preventative health.
