Annotation by Joshua Lederberg:
KW: The V-5, V-12 training units at Columbia University, assembled in
South Field, between South Hall (Butler Library) and Low Library
(taken from those steps looking southward.);
 Schneider, James G. 1987 The Navy V-12 Program.
  Boston: Hoghton-Miflin. 596 pp. is an excellent historical account
of the overall program, and its significance in maintaining the continuity
of institutions of learning through the exigencies of WW-2. -- not to
mention that of lucky individuals, selected by competitive examination,
for continued professional training in medicine, engineering and a
few other specialties; I presumably was one of the mass of blue enlisted
uniforms (bell-bottoms and all) on parade;
