Caption on back reads: "Dr. Joshua Lederberg, a biochemist with Stanford University, was one of the speakers during the two-day Viking Science Symposium, entitled "Earth and Mars: The Role of Life." Some one hundred scientists, engineers, and educators attended the symposium. The meeting was held prior to the launch of the first Viking spacecraft to the planet Mars. After an 11-month journey to the planet, the Viking will conduct a number of science investigations, including the search for life."
