Annotation by Joshua Lederberg:
Note: QC tranche 8/28/01 cleared;

KW: reflections on (long delayed) Harvard offers, just as I was
about to go to Stanford (1957-58).; we'd had a brief discussion
at the CFR.  He'd been Dean at Harvard College;

"The door not opened [TS Eliot] ...
I'd more or less forgotten this episode till just now, putting some
of my old papers in order.

There is one small purpose besides nostalgia in this anamnesis. My
(late) friend Tracy Sonneborn hinted that an important reason for
that [Harvard's] indecision was the rumor (most unhappily false)
that I never wore a necktie.
Could anyone corroborate or refute such a story?

It would have mattered, a few years earlier; and with all that Stanford
came to offer -- if I embrace the Harvard myth - I might have stayed
more the intellectual [sic!] in that setting. Hoever no regrets.

See you soon,
   Joshua  "
