Annotation by Joshua Lederberg:
KW: This folder: University of California, Berkeley, 1957-1958,
recites the bizarre story of my recruitment to the faculty of the
University of California, Berkeley, only to have it vetoes at last
minute by the UC-system president, Dr Sproull. I've never had a
satisfactory account of what happened, though subsequent chancellors
(Heymann, Atkinson) have been good friends. I put it down mainly
to budgetary wars between Berkeley and the newly arising UC-Davis
campus. In any event, this released me from obligation to UCB, and
enabled my moving to Stanford;
