I write you this letter as members of the Planning Committee for the NRC Conference on Mechanical Devices to Assist the Failing Heart. I have received a stack of answers to our first letter. On the basis of these results, I have formulated a second tentative program that I enclose. I ask that you review this and make any suggested changes sending this back to me as quickly as you can. I will then synthesize your answers and make a final program. I will then notify the participants.
Although there were many comments in answer to my first letter, they boil down as follows:
1) A large number thought we had devoted too much time to pumps, and
2) You would be surprised how many people think that they, and they alone, are responsible for the ideas concerning mechanical devices to assist the failing heart! This promises to be a very gamey conference with the participants defending their gadgets like a mother hen (or tiger) defending its young.
Please answer this as soon as you can, for I want to get this completed. Many thanks for your cooperation.
Ben Eiseman, M.D.
Professor and Chairman
