Dear Dr. Lederberg,
Enclosed photograph of Fred Griffith and letter to Dr. O.T. Avery (copy) were sent to me recently by Dr. Roy Avery. The letter
of 23 years ago records how inspired I was to learn in April 1943 from "Fess" some of the ramifications of his epic
discovery. It also records that Fred Griffith and Fess Avery never met.
All good wishes
Alvin F. Coburn, M.D.
Assistant Dean and Professor of Microbiology
