Dear Prof. Lederberg:
This is only a referate of the wonderful investigation of Prof. O.T. Avery and his coworkers about the Type transformations of pneumococci. During the war my colleagues could not get a reprint of this important publication. That's why I gave a referate, sending it to the "Angewandte Chemie" in march 1945.
Since 1945/46 other investigations about the same problem have been published by Prof. Andre Boivin (now director of an Institute of the French University at Strasbourg). He was able to transfer one type of Coli into another by extracts of the other. The transforming agent is also of the thymonucleic acid type.
Im am your's sincerely
Dr. Otto Westphal

history
Dear Otto,
You may remember I recently questioned you how you first heard about Avery.
Cleaning up my correspondence files, I realize you had already answered my question.
This was doubtless in response to my request for a reprint of your 'article'. I hope to see you again in June at ACMR.
