Description:
During World War II, Avery and many of his colleagues at the Rockefeller Institute were pressed into service as part of the war effort. Avery was a member of the Influenza Board and the Army Epidemiology Board. The Office of Scientific Research and Development was created by President Franklin Roosevelt at the behest of Vannevar Bush in order to facilitate close collaboration between scientists, engineers, and the armed services.
