Dear Alfred,
Your manuscript arrived just after we sent the two enclosed papers off to the PNAS. The similarity in what we both are trying to do is pretty obvious. It wasn't clear to me where you submitted your paper but if it is to PNAS and yours is not too far in advance of ours it would be nice if they could appear together.
We are receiving mild seismographic recordings about the progress resulting from the use of synthetic polymers for directing amino acid incorporation. These rumors range from "the code is broken" to "the code will be broken next week or month." We poor "unfortunates" on the West Coast just have to keep working in the dark and hope that the world won't pass us by.
Whatever happened to your plans for visiting us at Stanford? Didn't you make the trip west you were supposed to? If you do come let us know.
Give my best to Jim and Walter. Best regards from all.
Sincerely,
Paul Berg
