DeBakey had become a staunch and influential advocate for medical libraries through his involvement in the deliberations that
transferred the Army Medical Library to the National Institutes of Health as the National Library of Medicine. In this editorial,

in terrible condition, and could not adequately serve physicians and medical researchers if the situation was not remedied.
