"A Conversation Remembering Michael E. DeBakey with Dr. Donald A. B. Lindberg and Dr. Guillermo Torre-Amione" [Transcript]
Description:
Guillermo Torre-Amione, MD, PhD did his internal medicine residency as well as a cardiology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine before joining the clinical faculty there in 1995. In 1996, he became the Medical Director for the Cardiac Transplant Service at the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center at Methodist Hospital in Houston. Currently, he is also director of the Heart Failure Research Laboratory at Methodist, and conducts research examining the mechanisms of Immune activation and inflammation as it relates to myocardial dysfunction in the areas of heart failure and cardiac transplantation. Although Torre-Amione didn't get to know DeBakey well until much later, he talks about the iconic influence DeBakey had on him as a young medical resident, and describes doing rounds with DeBakey as almost a religious experience. He talks about DeBakey's work ethic and his commitment to his patients. Torre-Amione was one of the group of physicians who cared for DeBakey in 2006 after his dissecting aneurysm surgery; he discusses DeBakey's willingness to try alternative treatments at the time, and describes doing clinical rounds with him when DeBakey was 99 years old.
